Dr. Methé is a Professor in the Departments of Human Genome Medicine and Microbial and Environmental Genomics at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI). Dr. Methé has extensive experience in genomics, metagenomics, microbial ecology and physiology and handling large data sets from high throughput functional genomic methodologies including gene expression studies. – See more at: http://www.jcvi.org/cms/about/bios/bmethe#sthash.4lGyM0s9.dpuf.

Currently, Dr. Methé is a Co-Investigator of the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) ongoing at the JCVI for which she has served as the Co-Chair for the Manual of Procedures and is currently Co-Chair of the Metagenomics/Data Generation/Data Analysis Working Groups for the HMP consortium. Dr. Methé is also leading an effort in which metagenomic approaches are being applied to a study designed to investigate links between the human microbiome and psoriasis. – See more at: http://www.jcvi.org/cms/about/bios/bmethe#sthash.4lGyM0s9.dpuf

Heavy metals are essential for life, however, paradoxically exploitation of land for mineral extraction and manufacturing industry results in the release of large quantities of heavy metals that can be toxic to the natural environment. My research portfolio is designed to exploit state-of-the-art genomic, proteomic and metabolomic techniques to study the mechanisms by which biological systems handle heavy metals assessing: their impact as pollutants, their involvement in disease and the basic mechanisms by which they are bound within biological systems.
